In our Metal in Focus series, we explore materials, alloys, and surface treatments suitable for roll forming and used in our customers’ profiles. We begin with steel coated with zinc and magnesium – a smart solution that combines strength, long lifespan, and superior corrosion protection. Perfect for outdoor applications that require durability in harsh environments!

Superior Corrosion Protection. Zinc provides a cathodic protection effect, meaning it sacrifices itself to protect the steel from rust. Magnesium enhances this protection by reducing the corrosion rate and preventing rust from spreading.
Long Lifespan. The combination of zinc and magnesium offers better resistance than traditional galvanization (zinc alone). This means the material lasts longer in harsh weather conditions such as rain, snow, and humid environments.
Self-Healing Effect. If the coating sustains small scratches or damages, zinc and magnesium help form a protective layer that minimizes the risk of rust formation.
Resistance to Extreme Climatic Conditions. Withstands both high and low temperatures as well as environments with high humidity and salt exposure (e.g., coastal areas). Ideal for use in countries with harsh winters and fluctuating climates.
Cost-Effective and Resource-Efficient. The long lifespan reduces the need for maintenance and material replacements, saving both money and resources. Zinc and magnesium coatings also require less material than some other corrosion protection solutions, contributing to a more efficient use of raw materials, making it a sustainable choice.
Better Protection than Traditional Galvanization. Steel with a zinc and magnesium coating has been shown to have better corrosion resistance than hot-dip galvanized steel, especially in aggressive environments such as coastal or industrial areas.
Aesthetic Benefits. The surface maintains its appearance for a longer time without stains or rust breakthrough. In some applications, it can be used without additional painting, simplifying usage and reducing cost.
